Exploring the Benefits of X Streamlined Reply Option for DMS Users

What is the X new functionality for DM interaction?

X has rolled out a new functionality for DM interaction. It can now swipe right on any DM in a chain to directly reply to it.

The new reply process makes it easier to respond to any message in a chat. X also added the capacity to reply directly to a specific message within a DM thread in May. This new swipe-to-reply UI will enhance that capacity even more.

You can still add a general reply by typing a response into the text bubble at the bottom of the display. So, you don’t have to respond to a specific message by swiping on it. But it is another option to help improve the process. It could be handy for streamlining your chats.

So, cool, right?

It is another element of DMs in X. It was recently created only to accept non-follower messages from verified users as the default. At the same time, verified users can send encrypted DMs, but not non-paying users.

What more X is allowing, even for non-payers?

In this sense, it is somewhat surprising that X even allows non-payers to use this new swipe-to-reply functionality.

However, given that the vast majority of X users have not signed up for X Premium or formerly “Twitter Blue.” It probably would not see much use if it were restricted.

But overall, X is looking to make DMs a more significant focus with group chats. It is another element that Elon and Co, want to emphasize moving forward.

They lean into broader social media engagement trends and build on X’s private communities.

What’s more X is going to roll out?

X is also looking to roll out audio and video calls soon as an expansion of its messaging tools. But there has yet to be a word as yet on whether that, too, will be an X Premium exclusive.

Musk posted this week that X’s video and audio calling tools will be available on Android, iOS, and the web. Musk says it is an influential global address book with no phone number needed and X acting.

No one is sure how that applies precisely, given that X has only a fraction of the audience reach that Facebook or WhatsApp has.

But Musk believes that X can act as a better contact platform for direct calls due to the amount of people you can connect with in the app and with the help of an app.

X video and audio calls will not be encrypted, at least not at first.

Why ‘X’ has been trying to push DM Interaction for some time?

X has been trying to push DM interaction for some time, even before Musk purchased the platform, with previous management also looking to emphasize DMs as a critical customer service option. It never really caught on in a big way.

However, adding audio and video calls will change this significantly, while X is looking to build on the current messaging tools to maximize utility.

It could make it a more significant factor moving forward. And in that context, more minor tweaks like being able to swipe to reply will be more valuable than you might expect.

Either way, X DMs are evolving, and it is worth keeping tabs on what impacts they have on broader usage.
